ESWT Treatment of Bone Stress Injuries in Runners

This retrospective case series examines the outcomes of moderate to high-energy focused shockwave therapy (ESWT) in runners diagnosed with bone stress injuries (BSI). Forty athletes received an average of five ESWT sessions, resulting in a 98% return-to-running rate. Acute BSI cases treated within three months of diagnosis returned to land running significantly faster than those with delayed or non-union injuries. The study also highlights ESWT’s safety and potential benefits for bone remodeling, particularly in high-risk anatomical sites. These findings support the role of ESWT as a non-invasive treatment option for BSI, especially when conventional management proves insufficient.
